Living in Orange County with a Goldendoodle means one thing: you're going to the beach. A lot. Arie has opinions about all of them — and after extensive field research (read: a lot of sand in places sand should not be), here is the definitive guide to dog-friendly beaches in OC.

Why OC Is a Dog Beach Paradise

Orange County is genuinely one of the best places in California to have a dog. The weather is almost always perfect, the coastline stretches for miles, and several beaches have dedicated off-leash areas where your dog can run, swim, and do absolutely chaotic things with full legal permission.

That said, not all OC beaches allow dogs — and the rules vary wildly. Some have designated dog areas, some have seasonal restrictions, and some technically allow dogs but make you feel like a criminal for bringing one. This guide covers the ones that actually love dogs.

The Top Dog Beaches in Orange County

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Arie's #1 Pick

Huntington Dog Beach

This is THE dog beach in Southern California and arguably the most famous dog beach in the entire country. Stretching about a mile along Pacific Coast Highway, Huntington Dog Beach is fully off-leash and completely flat — perfect for dogs who need to sprint at full speed for reasons known only to them.

Arie goes absolutely feral here in the best possible way. The beach has parking lots nearby, water stations, and a community that genuinely loves dogs. On weekends it's busy, which means your dog will meet approximately 400 new best friends. For a Goldendoodle who treats every stranger like a long-lost family member, this is nirvana.

Pro tip: Go early on weekdays to avoid crowds. Parking on PCH fills up fast on weekends. Bring a towel for the drive home — sand will be everywhere.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Arie Approved

Corona del Mar State Beach (Dog-Friendly Areas)

Corona del Mar is one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Orange County, and the rocky cove areas near the tidepools are dog-friendly. It's not a run-wild-off-leash situation here — dogs need to be leashed — but the scenery is stunning and the beach itself is significantly less crowded than Huntington.

Arie loves the rocks and the tidepools. He has strong opinions about crabs. The crabs have stronger opinions about Arie. Everyone goes home fine.

Pro tip: Stick to the rocky north end for the most dog-friendly experience. The main beach can be restrictive.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great for a Chill Day

Laguna Beach (Select Areas)

Laguna Beach is gorgeous and has a few dog-friendly pockets, particularly at Crescent Bay and some of the smaller coves. The city has restrictions on peak season hours, so check current rules before you go. Early morning visits are almost always fine and the low-crowd vibe makes it one of Arie's favorite places to just sit and watch the waves like a distinguished gentleman.

The vibe here is more "peaceful morning walk" than "full chaos off-leash sprint," which is a nice change of pace.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Hidden Gem

Bolsa Chica State Beach

Less talked about than Huntington, Bolsa Chica runs right next to it and dogs are allowed in certain sections. It's wider, flatter, and often less packed. Good for long walks along the water with a leashed dog who just wants to sniff things for two hours straight.

OC Dog Beach Rules to Know

🐾 Know Before You Go

Most Orange County beaches that allow dogs require them to be leashed (6 feet max) except in designated off-leash zones. Huntington Dog Beach is the main off-leash exception.

Always bring: poop bags (multiple), fresh water for your dog, a towel, and patience for the post-beach sand situation.

Check local city websites before visiting as rules can change seasonally.

What to Bring to the Dog Beach

The Arie Safari Essential Beach Kit

After many beach trips, here's what we never leave home without:

A collapsible water bowl and enough fresh water for the whole trip — saltwater is not a substitute, no matter how much your dog disagrees. A long line leash for beaches where off-leash isn't permitted but you still want to give your dog some freedom. A dedicated beach towel just for your dog (you'll need it). And most importantly: poop bags. Many of them. Always more than you think.

The Honest Truth About Goldendoodles at the Beach

Goldendoodles at the beach are a lot. Arie runs in approximately 47 directions, greets every human and dog within a quarter mile radius, gets sand in his ears, his eyes, his fur, and somehow also in the car before he's even fully gotten in. He has once gotten his leash wrapped around a stranger's legs so thoroughly that we all had to stop and untangle it together like a team-building exercise.

And it is completely worth it every single time. There is nothing better than watching a Goldendoodle in their natural habitat (the beach, apparently, despite not being a water dog by design). Arie hits the sand and becomes his most authentic, unhinged self — and honestly, we could all take a lesson from that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are dogs allowed on Orange County beaches?

Yes — Orange County has several dog-friendly beaches. Huntington Dog Beach is the most famous and allows dogs off-leash. Other beaches like Laguna Beach and Bolsa Chica allow dogs on leash in certain areas. Rules vary by city and can change seasonally — always check before you go.

What is the best dog beach in Southern California?

Huntington Dog Beach is widely considered the best dog beach in Southern California — it's fully off-leash, over a mile long, flat, and has a community that genuinely loves dogs. Arie votes it #1 every time.

Do you need to clean up after your dog at OC beaches?

Yes — always. It's the law and it's the social contract that keeps dog-friendly beaches dog-friendly. Poop bags are essential. Bring more than you think you'll need. Most dog beaches have bag dispensers but supply varies.

Can dogs swim at Huntington Dog Beach?

Absolutely — swimming is one of the main attractions. Dogs can run and swim freely in the designated off-leash area. Bring fresh water for your dog to drink, as saltwater will make them sick if ingested in large amounts.

What should I bring to a dog beach?

The essentials: poop bags (many), fresh water and a collapsible bowl, a towel, a leash (even for off-leash beaches, for transitions), and sun protection for light-coated dogs on very sunny days. For longer trips: a first-aid kit, dog sunscreen for nose and ear tips, and a change of clothes for you.

Are there dog-friendly beaches near Newport Beach?

Yes — Corona del Mar (technically Newport Beach) allows dogs in certain rocky cove sections. The Balboa Peninsula has early-morning dog hours. Huntington Dog Beach is just a short drive north and is the best off-leash option in the area.
